About Us
The COASTAR programme creates impact through directly equipping early career researchers and rising university student leaders with interdisciplinary communication and leadership skills through commitment to a series of virtual and physical workshops, working meetings and a mini symposium as well as organic mentoring relationships.
Activities
Virtual and physical expert seminar
Expert seminar series aim to promote knowledge sharing of best practices on research and teaching skills with a focus on coastal sustainability and blue carbon research. Through the unique topics, academic attendees will increase their interdisciplinary capacity building.

Empowerment and training workshops
Training workshops by various COASTAR mentors focusing on various scientific communication tools and engagement skills aim to use specific case studies to provide context for application of these skills. Impacts achieved are increased professional and leadership skills that translate into rapid career advancement, and improved institutional academic track record.

Networking meetings
Networking meetings with government agencies, NGOs and corporate stakeholders aim to foster formal collaborations of sustainable coastal protection initiatives. These meetings also provide direct exposure for ECRs to environment outside of academia. Impacts are generated through co-designed and endorsed functioning blue carbon project that brings socioeconomic improvement.

UM-ENU networking meetings aim to establish mutually beneficial teaching and research partnerships and facilitate opportunities for student and academic exchanges. Impact is
gained through increased institutional reputation for commitment to research and teaching excellence.

Bite-sized Climate Action Module
Bite-Size Climate Action is a series of fun, flexible, and immersive short online modules designed to inspire Malaysian youth to act for the climate. You can visit here for more information. As one of the outputs from this project, ECRs will be trained to develop a Bite-sized Module: Water.

Immersive Field Expedition
A week-long fully funded immersive field expedition for all COASTAR mentors (including partners from UK) and recruits will take place at UM’s marine station in Bachok, east coast of Malaysia. This site is appropriate as a teaching demonstration site for coastal sustainability and blue carbon research, due to the availability of cutting-edge equipment and research facilities, and a mangrove forest easily assessable from the station.
